GOLDEN GIRLS

In March, we honored the "Golden Girls" -

The members of Moringa Garden Circle (Fort Lauderdale Garden Clubs) honored five of their members, who have achieved the amazing benchmark of 50 years of service as, Moringa’s  “Golden Girls”.

This joyful event took place at the March 2011 meeting where our Golden Girl honorees, Maureen Frazel, Maureen Lubbers, Pat Miller, Alliean Roberts and Jo Williams were presented with a tiara and a framed photograph of the Moringa flower, photographed by member, Barbara Richie

Moringa president, Sharon Bogard, thanked each of the honorees for their dedication, service and friendship, noting that “You are an inspiration and role model for each of us. We value the contribution, dedication, education, and sisterhood that each of you have given to us over this last half century."

Memorial Trees to be Planted at George English Park and the New City of Plantation’s Botanical Garden!

Dear Friends,

Moringa has had some family losses this year. Jean Martindale and Alliean Roberts both lost their dear husbands this summer. Moringa has an established Tree Fund that we use to commemorate the loss of our members and their spouses.

Jean Martindale had requested that Marty’s tree be planted at George English Park as Marty and Eben Reiger used to boat there together. We have received the City’s approval. We already have a Jacaranda by the boat ramp in Eben’s memory. Our plan is to plant another Jacaranda in proximity so the boys can be together again. The city of Fort Lauderdale has requested a rare yellow Jacaranda. Jean may prefer the purple, so we will decide down the line.

Alliean resides in Plantation and was in love with a tree she saw in bloom called a Cassia bakeriana which has showy pink blossoms along the stems. The City of Plantation has approved our donation and requested rare flowering trees for the new botanical garden, so this will be perfect! I just have to track these rare babies down!

We are accepting donations to our Tree Fund. If you would like to donate, please send your checks to
Moringa’s Treasurer :
Cindy Long,

524 Orton Avenue, 203
Fort Lauderdale, Fl. 33304-2007

Checks without a designated memorial tree go into the general Tree Fund. If you would like your donation to go to a specific tree, then please indicate on your check who’s tree the check is designated for such as Marty Martindale and/or Bob Roberts.

These trees will be in prominent locations and promote our club’s mission to stimulate the love of gardening in our members and the public.

Respectfully,

Rose Béchard-Butman

The Florida Federation of Garden Clubs District XI Roadside Wildflower Chair, Sandra Lynch and The Fort Lauderdale Garden Club's Community Education and Civic Improvement Chair, Rose Bechard-Butman have joined forces to install a demonstration roadside wildflower planting at I95 and Broward Boulevard's Greening Gateway to the city. It is their hope to encourage more planting of native wildflowers along roadsides to reduce our carbon imprint by eliminating more high maintenance mowing of sod and to encourage native birds and butterflies along our Flyway Corridor.

This project is made possible through a grant from the Community Foundation of Broward County. This is a true collaborative effort that includes Broward County's Naturescape, D.O.T., The Greening Gateways Committee, The City of Fort Lauderdale Urban Forestry Division and Softscapes Landscape Architect and Naturescape Broward member, L. Thomas Chancey.

Native Gaillardia and Coreopsis were planted by 40 volunteers on Saturday May 8th to include; The Fort Lauderdale Garden Club & it's Youth Gardeners, 4-H Junior Master Gardeners and friends of the garden club on Saturday May 8th at 10:00 AM followed by a lunch at Softscapes, which is located behind the planting area on SW 19th Avenue. The native wildflowers replaced non native plantings that did not survive last year's drought.

There was follow up event at Softscapes on Saturday, June 5th at 10:00 AM at 15 SW 19th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. A workshop with speakers on attracting birds and butterflies, composting and community gardens was presented.

It may be small, .10 acres, but it’s hers; at least in name.  On July 28 Wilton Manors Commissioners unanimously voted to rename “Slash Pine Park,” located at the corner of Northeast 20 Drive and Northeast 7 Avenue, to “M.E. DePalma Park.”.... Read More
